Science Lesson 2:
Basic Chemistry Concepts
Introduction to Chemistry
Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of elements and compounds, how they can change, and the energy that is released or absorbed when they change.
The Structure of an Atom
Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. They consist of three main subatomic particles:
- Protons: Positively charged particles in the nucleus.
- Neutrons: Particles with no charge in the nucleus.
- Electrons: Negatively charged particles orbiting the nucleus.
The Atomic Mass of an atom is roughly equal to the sum of its protons and neutrons.
Exercise: Calculate Atomic Mass
Elements and the Periodic Table
An element is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same numbers of protons. The Periodic Table organizes all known elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties.
Chemical Reactions
A chemical reaction is a process that leads to the chemical transformation of one set of chemical substances to another. The starting materials are called reactants, and the new substances formed are called products.
